The 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team was originally activated as part of the 17th Airborne Division on March 15, 1943.

On July 21, 1943, the men of the 295th Ordnance Medium Maintenance Company arrived in Toccoa, Georgia and by November 24, 1943, completed their basic training at Camp Toccoa, which included an increased emphasis on physical training, such as long road marches and running the Currahee Mountain.
